ASACOL®, the company’s flagship product, is the most prescribed drug worldwide in its class for the treatment of IBD. Asacol contains the active ingredient 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), commonly known as mesalazine or in the U.S.A, mesalamine. Asacol is indicated for the treatment of Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and in many markets, Crohn’s Disease (CD), the two major sub-categories of IBD. Tillotts promotes Asacol® through a global network of affiliates and carefully chosen licensees and distributors in 54 countries. This global partnering network allows Tillotts to choose the best Gastro companies in each country and to reach out to the world.

Colpermin® Another Tillotts product is Colpermin (trade mark Medacalm® in Germany http://www.medacalm.com), which is a naturally-based, safe and effective remedy for the treatment of symptoms of IBS. In the 80’s, Tillotts divested  the rights of Colpermin in the UK and Ireland to what is now Johnson & Johnson. They market the product very successfully as a fully reimbursed Rx product, whilst the product is also available as an OTC medicine. In Germany the product was out-licensed in 2004 to GSK who markets it as an OTC medicine. In all the other markets Tillotts retains the marketing rights. Colpermin has not been widely commercialized and is available in only a select number of markets. However, recently new regulatory routes have opened up for gaining approval for a product such as Colpermin in the EU as well as North America, without the need to run costly and, especially in IBS, risky clinical trials. Tillotts is actively working on a pan-European application for Colpermin and also for the US and Canada markets. Tillotts plans to out-license the rights of Colpermin in the first half of 2010.

For further information on IBD and IBS see the therapeutic area.

Asacol®, Colpermin®, Topasa® and Xenema® are Trademarks or registered Trademarks of Tillotts Pharma AG.
