  Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a collective name for a number of chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract with alternative periods of relapse and remission.

  The two most frequent forms of IBD are Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). UC is characterised by inflammation of the inner lining of the colon (or large intestine) and rectum. CD may involve inflammation anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus, but most frequently affecting the small or large intestines.

The impact of symptoms on well-being and quality of life is often profound. Because IBD is a chronic condition that usually has a peak onset in early life, disease management requires life-long monitoring and intervention.
