  WHAT IS CROHN'S DISEASE (CD)  
     
 
  Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory condition with alternative periods of relapse and remission.

  The symptoms tend to come and go, the patients having periods when they are well for a time (in remission) and periods when they have a flare-up of symptoms (recurrence or relapse). Crohn's disease is responsible for the inflammation along the bowel. This inflammation leads to ulcers, abscesses and narrowing strictures in the bowel. Occasionally, the abscesses can break through the skin (this is known as a fistula), allowing pus to drain. Crohn's disease can affect any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the back passage or anus. The section at the end of the small bowel and the beginning of the large bowel, known as the ileoceacal area, is most frequently affected.
