  WHAT IS ULCERATIVE COLITIS (UC)  
     
 
  Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition with alternative periods of relapse and remission.

  This means that the symptoms tend to come and go; patients have periods when they are well for a time (in remission) and then may have a flare-up of symptoms (recurrence or relapse). The final part of the large bowel (rectum) is involved in 95% of patients, with variable degrees of extension to the large bowel or (colon). The disease affects the mucosal surface (inner lining) of the large bowel. The mucosa becomes inflamed and ulcerated which means that it is red and swollen with the surface broken and bleeding.
