Tillotts Pharma – 30 years of pioneering research in Switzerland

PRESS RELEASE
Tillotts Pharma - 30 years of pioneering research in Switzerland

RHEINFELDEN, Switzerland, June 7, 2016 - For 30 years, Tillotts Pharma AG, headquartered in Rheinfelden, has been committed to improve care and treatment options for people suffering from gastrointestinal diseases. We work with medical professionals, such as gastroenterologists and hepatologists, in the development of advanced drug products for the treatment of chronic inflammatory bowl diseases. Our specific focus on the digestive system means we have an in-depth knowledge on the challenges that doctors face on a daily basis. It also helps us look for innovative concepts to improve care and the quality of life for the five-to-six million people who live with inflammatory bowel diseases worldwide1. As part of our drive to improve care and treatment options, we have ongoing development programmes and research collaborations with renowned Swiss research institutions such as the University of Basel, supported by the Swiss Federal Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI), and the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland.

Research Collaboration with the University of Basel
The objective of the research project with the University of Basel, supported by the CTI, was to develop innovative drug delivery formulations based on specialised particulate carriers in combination with innovative coating systems to precisely deliver active pharmaceutical ingredients to specific sites of the gastro-intestinal tract. "We are proud that our joint research project with the University of Basel was supported by the CTI. This shows that Federal Government recognises the benefits and innovation value of our research activities." commented Dr. Roberto Bravo, Head of Pharmaceutical Development Department, Tillotts Pharma AG.

The innovation of the new delivery systems consists of the combination of a new porous material that work as drug carrier, modulating the drug physico-chemical properties, mucoadhesive materials and engineered coating systems for the site-specific targeting of the gastrointestinal tract.

The results from the in vitro studies show the potential of these innovative delivery systems to allow a precise targeting of the gastrointestinal tract and extend the residence time of the particulates for controlled releasing the active pharmaceutical ingredient in the area of interest, increasing its local or systemic bioavailability for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. The in vitro results have been recently published in peer-reviewed journals. "The findings of our studies set the basis for the development of innovative dosage forms for medications. The targeted release of active ingredients in the colon can significantly improve the efficacy and safety of new drugs. We hope that this new technology will be of benefit for the treatment of patients. " said Prof. Dr. Jörg Huwyler, Head of the Division of Pharmaceutical Technology at University of Basel.

MEDIENMITTEILUNG
Tillotts Pharma - 30 Jahre wegweisende Forschung in der Schweiz

RHEINFELDEN, Schweiz, 07.
